EDIT: I work at a datacenter, so I jacked a server when nobody was looking . I'll keep updating it as I keep updating the project. Note: if this gives you a 404 error then somebody bought the server I'm only kind of allowed to be using, and I'll jack another server shortly.Last updated: 5/17 TODO list Change List OP: Executive summary: I'm currently floating the idea around in my head of recreating LostMagic as an HTML5 game. I do enjoy projects, but will inevitably give up if I'm doing it solo, so I'm seeing if anybody else wants to help. Longer version: I played a lot of LostMagic back in the day, and occasionally grow nostalgic for it. Unfortunately, multiple things:
Note that I am *not* saying "omg guys letz maek lost magcik into a gaem!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I'm not even in the planning stage yet. This is like the pre-planning phase, where I'm still getting ideas, discarding some and fleshing out others. Also note that if nobody's interested (and please, be honest. Like, seriously guys, I have a full time job and am going to school; I really don't want to waste time on a project that nobody's going to play with,) the chances of this randomly materializing for your enjoyment are zero. So, thoughts? Opinions? Good idea, terrible idea? Desire to help? |

I certainly have the desire to help, and I think it's a good idea. Rebalancing the game would be awfully nice as well, since as us old-timers know, some spells were just absolutely useless. If you decide to go through with this, count me in with regards to whatever services I can offer. |

Not to put you on the spot here, but what skills do you have? I'm a poop artist, and I don't have knowledge of HTML5/Javascript game dev, though I do have a bit of knowledge in programming in general. However, my strengths are more planning and project management, unfortunately :s If (big if, incidentally) this project gets off the ground we will need (at the *very* least) a few beta testers who aren't devs to give us an outside look at the progress we've made. Also off-topic note that doesn't fit nicely elsewhere: I really don't want to get people's hopes up and then dash them by not following through, so let me be clear: right now I'm simply gauging interest and hoping to round up talent to help make this happen, I'm not saying that an LostMagic clone will be a thing a month from now

When it comes to the nuts and bolts of such an undertaking, not much. I have some formal training in C++, but I don't think object-oriented languages like C++ would be useful in an undertaking like this. For artists, we have some great ones, and I'm sure some members would be willing to put in a helping hand in whatever way the can. |

I've done some stuff in PHP, XHTML, and CSS but nothing html or java game related. I'm also working on my own game so idk how much time I'd have to offer, I've actually never played lost magic so it'd be fun to play if this does come to fruition. |

I'm incredibly useless with regard to these kinds of things, but I think it's a great idea nonetheless. |

I doubt that you have absolutely no skills that we would need, at the very least we need people who aren't heavily involved in development to tell us what we're too close to see. Some roles that I can think of that we'd need to get rolling (in no particular order):
(at least, I'll probably need the last one :P) Obviously a person can do multiple things if that person wants to, but we need at least one person for all those things. |

So how are you planning to clone this exactly? I'm mostly confused on why you need an artist since... the game already has all the art you'd need? |

Maybe "clone" is the wrong word - I was thinking of building a game from the ground up (using an engine to make it easier, obviously), but the end result would be essentially LostMagic. Is there a better way? I might be able to somehow rip the contents of a LostMagic SD card to a computer, but it would definitely be compiled and not source, and the multiplayer would almost definitely not work. I might be able to get the art, but that depends on how they did it. But even if I could, wouldn't that be (more blatant) copyright infringement? I dunno how copyright law works exactly. |

It would be copyright infringement only if you plan on selling the finished product (I think). |

Idk, remember Fighting is Magic got a cease and desist from Hasbro? though, I think with an 8 year old, not-very-popular game like this, the devs aren't gonna care let alone be looking for it probably I would prefer the original art / sprites / music / battle stages myself, maybe with some updated spells. I bet you could find a lot of the sprites online |

Nintendo's usually super duper chill about this sort of thing, they're like the least likely to go after people for copyright stuff when no money making's involved. I think Hasbro wanted to nip something like fighting is magic in the bud because A) a fighting game isn't really how they want mlp to be known and B) to make sure people couldn't just do the same thing but as a dating sim type game down the line. I mostly ask because art assets could take a huuuuuuuuuge amount of time, I've been plugging away at the art stuff for my game for 2 years now and I'm still not done. It might be worth just working on the multiplayer portion since people can always go play roms of lost magic but the servers are going down (have gone down already?) so no more multiplayer can happen. It also saves you from having to do story mode type assets. |

http://www.spriters-resource.com/ds/lostmagic/ The sprites are out there and stuff, but I think original art would be the best route to take for this sort of project -- it may take a little more time, but the end project would be rad. Even if it's just revamped sprites and new mugshots, it would be better imo |

No, I said the original art, as in I would prefer the stuff that's from the original game |

. I'll keep updating it as I keep updating the project. Note: if this gives you a 404 error then somebody bought the server I'm only kind of allowed to be using, and I'll jack another server shortly.
