I'm incredibly useless with regard to these kinds of things, but I think it's a great idea nonetheless.

I doubt that you have absolutely no skills that we would need, at the very least we need people who aren't heavily involved in development to tell us what we're too close to see.

Some roles that I can think of that we'd need to get rolling (in no particular order):

  • project manager

  • developers

  • testers that aren't devs

  • level designers

  • artists

  • people who have ideas (balance changes, things to add, etc)

  • people to say ra ra ra if the people involved want to give up

(at least, I'll probably need the last one :P)

Obviously a person can do multiple things if that person wants to, but we need at least one person for all those things.

I have been waiting for this moment my whole life. Count me in for tester, idea/balance contributor, etc.

I was really into meta discussion of lostmagic and know quite a lot about the game, so I'd be a good consultant for balance discussion, team building, and really anything else remotely related to competitive multiplayer discussion.

As for coding and art, I'm pretty useless. But I am DEFINITELY interested in this project and am very VERY excited that it exists.

I do appreciate the enthusiasm, but right now I'm still in the process of looking over various Javascript engines; I'm still really far from having any kind of well thought-out plan <_<. I don't want you to get super hyped then me be like "Psych, got to focus on school," is the only thing.

I was kind of hoping there would be at least one other interested person who knows stuff about at least programming, and at best HTML5 game dev. If I end up doing the dev solo the chances of me giving up are much, much higher, and the progress would be much, much slower.

I'm willing to move away from HTML5/Javascript and use an entirely different language if somebody here is more comfortable or has experience in one. I'm not married to the HTML5 idea; I just think it would be really cool, nobody would need to download/install anything, and should work on 100% of platforms. That being said, if somebody wants to Java or Python or C# or Brain**** (ok, probably not Brain****) I'd be totally down.

I'm ok with programming, not good at web programming, and really rusty in general. So yeah, I know a bit of programming, but I'm probably not of help because huge ass time constraints and very little experience in the system you want to use for it.

I'm more than willing to change the language, but if you don't have the time that's an entirely different thing

I don't have much time because I usually work over full time 6 days a week, with weird hours, and I don't have much experience at high end programming like this. So I honestly don't have much to offer, sadly.

We used to have a pretty good web developer on the site, but she left a while ago.

That's a lot of work, wow. Yeah, not much time for a project like this.

It's unfortunate that she left. Is there anybody who knows any languages, not necessarily web development?

Like I said I know php, xhtml, and css (I'm working on some javascript right now) but I've never done anything game oriented that's browser based.

If you think you're interested, look into various HTML5/Javascript game engines. I'm doing some research right now, but unfortunately the whole game-in-your-browser thing is new, so even for engines that look to have promise (right now I'm looking at Quintus) the documentation, examples, etc are notably lacking. I might end up going with a different language simply because of this, but I'm hoping I don't have to.

Also, apparently no Javascript engine wants to deal with the mouse. Like, come on people, that's half the input. I need to be able to select units <_<

Fair enough, if you end up wanting to give up some time let me know :D

would Newgrounds maybe have someone? They've always been a huge game/movie creation hub, although they're mostly flash based...

Maybe, but I'm not sure if I'd trust somebody from Newgrounds :/

Also, I work in a datacenter and jacked a server that was recently reclaimed, so here's a server that should be online. Right now it has Isaac running around without animations on a jet black background with ugly debugging text in the top left. I figured out how to create the selection rectangle though, how to make Isaac move then stop moving, stuff like that. This might be easier then I thought (he says, knocking on wood).

Really the only functionality right now is clicking (starting at the top left of the rectangle) and dragging an (invisible) rectangle around Isaac, then left clicking again to move him. No, you can't create the rectanle any other way. Why? Because I just threw this together and I need to sleep because I work the overnight shfit and need to be up in 7 hours, be happy with wachu got <_<

If you view source I commented it, adding TODOs and stuff. Yeah, it's ugly, I'll clean it up later.

Zero networking functionality, and I haven't even really looked into it, kind of like how you do all the other smaller homework to avoid studying for the huge final. But, I'm beginning to think that this might be easier than I thought. Phaser (the JS engine I'm using right now) seems to have most of the stuff I want already pre-made. I'm pretty sure the three hardest parts are the selection rectangle, moving the camera, and (by far the hardest) networking. One down, two to go. Everything else (animations, creating fireballs, etc) should be easy to do.

REGARDLESS, this is a quick and dirty update, so that people don't think I'm not actually interested in this; it's just going to take a loooooong time if nobody can halp. I did get one work-friend who might be interested in helping, but he's still an unknown right now.

(Note: I'm not paying for this server, so if somebody orders a server to the specs that the box I jacked has and it has the misfortune to be lotteried, it won't be my website anymore.)

I like the "starcraft with pokemon" :D

I forget how it was originally controlled, and if I should stay with that. IIRC you select units, click to move, then it automatically deselects the units. If you want to move them again, you have to select them again. Is that correct? If that is correct, should I keep it like that? Or would it be better if I make it the traditional RTS style control where it's left clicking and boxing to select, left clicking instantly deselects the units you had selected, and right clicking moves all selected units to the location? That way the units aren't instantly deselected and you can just right click another place to move them there. The only downside to this I see is that if somebody here has a mac I'd need to give them the option to go back to the traditional control scheme, because they don't have a right click (without holding down alt, which would get annoying).

Opinions?

Also, the sprite sheet linked to in the first page of this is two things: the only sprite sheet I can find, and terribly put together. The sprites aren't equadistant from each other, there's more pixels on the left side that I'd need to cut off, stuff like that. If somebody wants to take the Isaac part of the sprite sheet and make it all pretty (32x32 pixels all equadistant from each other, preferably in one line, not multiple horizontal lines). If somebody wants to fix the sprite sheet for me that would be sweet <3

EDIT: Updated "game", "patch" notes follow

High level:

  • You can select Isaac any way you want now
  • Made selection area visible
  • Made selection/movement traditional LostMagic style
Technical:

  • Added cases 2, 3, and 4. Players can now create the selection rectangle starting at any orgin they want
  • Added the render() function with a Phaser.debug call that makes selectionRect visible
  • Once Isaac moves he is automatically deselected, which is how LostMagic for the DS works. You select unit, move units, unit is magically deselected
  • Added more commentastic comments to explain what's going on
  • Halp me pls :(

I think that RTS-like controls a la Age of Mythology would be a godsend for something like LostMagic. The actual DS controls were similar in that you could drag the stylus into a box shape to select the units you wanted to move, and press the stylus to the screen to execute a move command.

I never played Age of Mythology, but I did play a lot of the Command and Conquer series. Is it similar to that?

Also, I've done some more stuff. I edited the OP and added a link to my TODO list, which has some stuff that I could use some help on. I also added pretty little tier 1 runes (hit spacebar). They don't do anything yet (but Fire 1 does make the text say omgomgomg if you click on it), but I'm working on it. Maybe a week or so and you'll be able to make a fireball!
