I will be going back and editing this with more commentary and some extra stuff later on, but I wanted to get the jist of it out for Greg since he needs team advice. Check out this topic for some additional information on teams and figuring out what monsters to capture and train.

Note: Every monster is assumed to be level 50 and every item is assumed to be level 6. For monsters with more than one item listed the first is most highly recommended.

Best teams:

Runefeed- Angel Coat
Shine Hound- Demon Horn
Wyvern- Demon Horn/Life Bracelet/Dragon Scale
Best map: Any

Shine Hounds are pretty much the ideal rushers. They have all the natural advantages of hounds including high speed, high attack, 3 units, and enough HP to take a pounding. The only problem with hounds is they are easily killed with magic--unless you are using Shine Hounds, who have one of the highest natural magic defense stats in the game. Their best aspect is the special resistance to Pure Terror which they get automatically for being light element monsters.

Wyverns are pretty much just filler flying monsters picked to stop the enemy from abusing Swamp Abyss and for their similar stats to Hounds. Also of note is their advantage of being neutral element to make up for the low magic defense. Wyverns are great support monsters that can help turn the tide in the beginning phase of crystal control on maps like Windmill Plains. They also can provide a little extra rushing power to supplement your Shine Hounds (even moreso if you equip them with Demon Horn).

Lastly, Runefeeds are necessary staples. You will have a very hard time capturing mana crystals without them and with Angel Coat the enemy will have a hard time getting his monsters to land any hits on them. Along with their high evasion, high speed, and good magic defense, Runefeeds are your ideal tool for capturing and defending crystals. If you lose your Runefeeds, your team's long-term survivability will be crippled along with your ability to keep on the spell casting pressure. While it should be a priority to keep them alive, they don't tend to need much babysitting so that's a plus.

This team thrives on open maps with few crystals. It has pure terror resistance, great rushing potential, good crystal control, and all around good reliability. It is probably one of the best teams you can run.

--

Runefeed-Angel Coat
Elpia-Dragon Scale
Rune Gnome-Demon Horn
Best map: Windmill Plains

In terms of play style this one is almost the polar opposite of the one listed above. That was more straight forward and built for surprise rushes. This one is all about micro management, strategic placement of bless spells, and usage of perfect Wyrms and explosions which all combine into (ideally) a constant stream of pressure to wrestle away mana crystals and to goad the enemy into falling into your traps. This team's big flaw is the lack of Pure Terror immunity making the Shine Hound team the best for all but one map. Windmill Plains. Elpias are beastly on that map as a Shine Hound team user will have a hard time keeping up when you use your Elpias to kill their Runefeeds and slowly kill them by taking their mana crystals. Their speed, power, and flying ability makes them perfect for surprise attacks and when combined with usage of Rune Gnomes both to assist Elpias and distract the enemy this is a force to be reckoned with. The thinking man's team.

Fun Teams:

Rune Gnome-Demon Horn
Rune Gnome-Demon Horn
Rune Gnome-Demon Horn
Best map: Balance Temple/Blaze Lake/Silverpeak Gorge

Note: One Rune Gnome is sometimes swapped for a Iron Shield Earth Dragon or Dragon Scale Elpia.

Most powerful team in the game. This will rip any team to shreds almost instantly when berserked, under High Bless, or both. This team does have some problems with Swamp Abyss which forces you to keep them spread apart, Pure Terror, which makes you berserk them, and Gale Arrows, which makes you increase their magic defense. While heavy on baby sitting this is still pretty fun to use and deadly in the right hands.

Runefeed-Angel Coat/Gale Shoes (depending on if you're Life Shine rushing)
Earth Dragon-Life Bracelet/Iron Shield/Demon Horn
Rune Gnome-Demon Horn
Best map: Balance Temple/Blaze Lake/Silverpeak Gorge

The best Life Shine rushing team. Earth Dragons are great as tanks especially after using Light2+Light3 on them. Rune Gnomes are also great backup. The real power of this team is in Life Shine rushes. Any time a Earth Dragon gets low on health whether it's from your own Earth3+Wind3 or an enemy's monsters you can use Life Shine on them to send the enemy's team into critical condition and leave the mage with one health. This is where the Runefeed come in to deal that decisive blow and win the match. It sounds predictable on paper but can actually make for some intense matches and was a popular team back in the day. One last thing is that Swamp Abyss can be annoying.

Silfeed-Gale Shoes/Angel Coat/Dragon Scale
Earth Dragon-Iron Shield/Life Bracelet/Demon Horn
Wyvern-Demon Horn/Life Bracelet/Gale Shoes/Iron Shield
Best map: Balance Temple/Blaze Lake/Silverpeak Gorge

This is a variant of the above team. It plays almost the same but this time you have Wyverns to try to rush the mage while you tank the Earth Dragon to distract them. I've personally never been a fan due to the large amount of babysitting Wyverns and Silfeeds need with 1 monster to protect them and the fact that the team pretty much falls apart if one group of monsters dies, though it's still a breath of fresh air from usual Life Shine rush teams.

Silfeed-Gale Shoes/Angel Coat/Dragon Scale
Elpia-Dragon Scale
Wyvern-Demon Horn/Life Bracelet/Iron Shield/Gale Shoes
Best map: Windmill Plains

This was originally shown to me by a Japanese player in late 2007 though it sadly never got much wide spread use. That's a shame as it's loads of fun to use. You've got the Elpias who are just as good on the map as they are in Dragon Blast's team but you've also got Wyverns replacing the Rune Gnomes. They can move around the map much more gracefully than Rune Gnomes and this allows you to support the Elpias as well as do surprise rushes on the enemy, something Dragon Blast's team has trouble doing. The downfall of the team is the Silfeeds who are ridiculously easy to kill with Earth Magic and aren't even as durable as Runefeeds. The Wyverns are easier to use but don't provide near the same power as Rune Gnomes do. Overall this is still a great team which is good at keeping pressure on the enemy on top of easier rushing though you sacrifice some durability. It's worth checking out.

Older teams:

Silfeed-Angel Coat/Gale Shoes
Shine Hound-Demon Horn
Jetvern-Demon Horn/Life Bracelet

This was the earliest team to become widespread that I would call anything close to good. It achieved a degree of success amongst rushers back in the day who had gotten tired of seeing Swamp Abyss shut down their 2 Hound team rushes. The main problem is that it just plays too much like the Wyvern Shine Hound team at the top. The added power with the Jetverns is barely noticeable as the other team already kills the enemy mage near instantly and it doesn't come close to justifying the massive downgrades that Silfeeds are compared to Runefeeds. Silfeeds are only worth it when being used to make new teams with different play styles, and this version just comes across as an unoriginal clone of the WSR team. It is unfortunate that the "upgrade" is so slight and simply not worth it.

--

Runefeed-Angel Coat
Jetvern-Demon Horn/Life Bracelet
Rune Gnome-Demon Horn

For a long time this was considered the most well rounded team in the game and was the first "super team" to achieve wide spread use following the wide spread abuse of Swamp Abyss. This team's strategy is pretty clear. Jetverns are your main rushers but double as being able to tank out damage. Meanwhile you'll have the Rune Gnomes in the back sniping out the enemy monsters. Rounding out the team is Runefeeds Unfortunately this team has some pretty big problems compared to the one listed above it. Due to the lack of light element monsters Pure Terror just wrecks this team and Rune Gnomes need to be taken care of as Gale Arrows is their worst enemy.

Runefeed-Angel Coat
Divider-Demon Horn
Gnome-Demon Horn/Dragon Scale

My favorite team, though a deeply flawed one. This is more a less a slightly worse branch of the above Jetvern team. Gnomes are much worse than Rune Gnomes both in terms of the amount of babysitting and damage output. Dividers have slightly lower lower HP than Jetverns but higher attack and magic defense though it would be hard to justify the 6 UP cost. Regardless I actually had a lot of fun using this team back in the day. Those problems with Gnomes actually served to make the matches more intense and the Dividers were much better rushers than Jetverns both for their higher attack and their large range which allowed them to attack through cracks in Earth King. When I think of this team I think of great, fast paced, and unpredictable matches from the good old days.

Action Replay team:

Runefeed-Angel Coat(level 6)
Shine Hound-Demon Hound(level 10)
Elpia-Dragon Scale(level 10)

If you don't have Action Replay know that level 10 items continue the formula and give a 100% boost to a stat in comparison to the 60% boost of level 6 items. The exception is the Dragon Scale which gives anything equipped with it 99 magic defense or in other words means that magic spells will only do 1% of their base damage or not even a scratch. Runefeeds have the level 6 angel coat because I didn't notice any difference between it and its level 10 version. Shine Hounds are incredible rushers with level 10 Demon Horns having the same base attack as Dividers and thus being able to kill the enemy nearly instantly. The real difference is in the Elpias who pretty much serve to be as unstoppable tanks when you combine 99 Magic Defense with their already huge evasion, accuracy, and damage output. You can pure terror but that's just a temporary solution. Certainly makes for some weird matches provided your opponent also has Action Replay.

Iwas thinking of death fish wyvern and ???

Death Fish is a great monster for story mode. It's basically a hound that can capture crystals; it has high attack, good speed, and good HP, but its magic defense is so low that it is widely considered unusable for wifi play. Even if you decide to go against the odds and use it on your team, you are forced to equip it with dragon scale to boost its all ready abysmal magic defense. It just dies way too easily to magic; A single Fire 2 explosion will kill it in one hit.

I do think if its magic defense was higher, it would be a great asset for harassing runefeeds though. Since it captures, it would be an additional monster that can be a threat in crystal defense and could be a replacement for runefeeds that also served as rush support in the end game. I can see it being useful with a level 8 dragon scale, but that's only possible with action replay in hacked gameplay. A good team for this would look something like Wyvern, Death Fish, Runefeed or Jetvern, Death Fish, Silfeed. Death fang, wyvern, silfeed could work too (theoretically) but you'd have to be careful about pure terror. It would probably be a good team to use on Windmill Plains or SPG, but I can't see it working anywhere else.

I've always been a big fan of the death fish/ death fang family. I wish more people gave them dragon scale and tried them out on teams. I just think they are potentially underestimated simply because they can capture. If you do decide to use them, they require a lot of babysitting, but it wouldn't be the first time somebody opted to use a low tier monster (elpia). You'll just have to experiment with it. Their biggest issue is magic defense so you *have* to give them dragon scale. There is no other way around it.

--

The reason shine hounds are typically used as the 4 up monster on teams is largely because they have such good magic defense for their stats that they make a great rushing monster. They are also light element which gives them some resistance to pure terror and they have enough speed to keep up with isaac. Death fish/ death fang is water element so it doesnt have resistance to pure terror or pacify and it has a weakness to fire which is one of the most used elements in the game. That's why most people stick with shine hound.

If you're going to use Death Fish, try Death Fish (Dragon Scale), Wyvern (Demon Horn), Runefeed (Angel Coat). Just be aware that your team suffers from durability issues and that it is very important to protect your monsters through to the endgame or your team's integrity will fall apart. Theoretically, this team will only work on small maps which means anything other than Windmill Plains and Silverpeak Gorge is out of the picture.

You will most likely be playing against teams like Wyvern, Shine Hound, Runefeed and Elpia, Rune Gnome, Runefeed so you will have to think outside of the box to cope with your disadvantage. However, if you can keep the other team at bay with crippling/ paralyzing spells or if you can somehow manage to catch the enemy off guard in a High Bless confrontation without losing units yourself, this would be a great pressure team in the endgame as it could take crystals much more quickly. Sometimes gimmick teams work really well as a surprise, but I'm still not quite convinced it would be worth it to run a death fish. Try it out for yourself for awhile and then decide what you think about it.

Hope this helps.

They're just terrible monsters in general. Boxdog is much better than Dogbox though because it has a natural evasion buff, so with angel coat it can tank out physical attacks. Dogbox has slightly higher defense, but the trade-off isn't worth it since it doesn't have a natural evasion buff. Both are crap because they die really quickly to magic though.

All of them except Stone Golem, but it isn't actually that useful. Stone Golems are slow moving and have low attack, but they don't really die to anything. You can stick one next to a crystal and you probably won't lose it for the remainder of the match, but they aren't really a threat either. You can literally just run around them without much risk.

Another problem I have with using the Stone Golem is that your team won't have any real power due to the large UP cost and will get shut down by swamp abyss. Why waste that UP on a huge monster that can't really kill anything when you can put it to better use by upgrading some weaker monsters and bringing in something like a shine hound?

That being said, Stone Golems haven't really seen much use due to the reasons above, but there could be some unexplored potential there. I have no idea what it could be though. If Stone Golem came in a group of 2 instead of 3 and had much higher HP, it might have been useful as a Life Shine monster. Either that, or a major attack speed boost. Stone Golem is one of the slowest attacking monsters in the game.

It just has the potential to be a great monster if only the developers had thought it out a little better.

I was thinking about using golems as a shield while attacking with ranged monsters from behind 8);
I'm saying this because I don't like the shine hound so I am (at least) trying to make more teams :(
